Important Message from the Office: Assessment, 2020-21 Timetable, ‘Grade’ meetings & Grade 12 Capstone/Scholarships

Posted on 2020-04-28 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Good morning everyone,

I want to take the time to provide you with a few updates as students continue to learn from home. I truly understand that parents, students and staff are adjusting to this new reality and are trying balance work, home learning, personal circumstances and responsibilities. At the school level, we all miss our face to face interactions with students, parents and community members – we look forward to the day when we have students and staff back in the school.

Please take a few moments to look at the important information below as it pertains to this school year and the 2020-2021 school year.

  1. The District has sent out a message re: learning, assessment and reporting. The guidelines are different for students in Grades 7-9 versus students in Grades 10-12. While students have the option to engage in learning opportunities, it is important to understand the end result of your choice. Please click on the link below get a full summary.

       2. I will be hosting OPTIONAL “Grade” check ins through TEAMS on Monday, May            4th. Student will get an invite sent to their school district email.  Currently, Mr.                    Bellows and I have a video conference every Wednesday with our Grade 12                          students.

These will be short meetings where kids can connect with each other and where
they can provide feedback on their home learning experiences. Students will also               be able to ask me questions that they may have.

Monday, May 4th: Grade 7 and 8s @ 9:30 am
Monday, May 4th: Grade 9s @ 10:30 am
Monday, May 4th: Grade 10s @ 11:30 am
Monday, May 4th: Grade 11s @ 1 pm

  1. Grade 12s will be presenting their Capstone Presentations this week (on Thursday and Friday). They are also in the midst of completing their Local Scholarship applications and District Dogwood applications. Information regarding these activities/opportunities have been shared with all Grade 12 students and parents directly. If you have any questions about the above please contact Mr. Bellows at cbellows@sd83.bc.ca
  2. We are currently starting to build our timetable for the 2020-2021 school year. Prior to Spring Break we were able to get course selections from every student so we are now able to make decisions based on student choice.

While there will be some changes in what we offer, I would like to share that we                 will be able to offer a Hockey Skills ‘block’ next year. Students in Grades 7-12 will             be able to be on the ice 3 blocks a week working on skill development.  There will               be a fee for this opportunity as we do have to pay for the ice rental. This class is                   open to all students – from beginners to players who play rep hockey. The focus is
on fun, skills and acquiring/encouraging passion for a lifelong sport.

Please call the school or email me at mmarino@sd83.bc.ca to sign up for this                       course, as it was not a part of the initial course selection process.

As usual, feel free to call me at school 250-836-2831 or email me at mmarino@sd83.bc.ca if you have any questions regarding the above points or other school related issues.

Warm regards,
